Mikail`s Berlin Sessions feat. Hogir Göregen - Meşk Havası by Selim Sesler

Hi everyone! I'm excited to announce the start of a new video series called "Mikail's Berlin Sessions". In this series, I'll be inviting many prominent musicians living in Berlin to record duo performances. These videos, filmed in various locations across Berlin, both indoors and outdoors, aim to showcase the city's musical diversity and aesthetic richness. What makes this series truly unique is that, even though the piece to be played is pre-selected, the performances are mostly unrehearsed and take the form of jam sessions, capturing the spontaneity and authenticity of the moment. Instead of aiming for a perfectly polished professional video and audio recording, we're focused on delivering high-quality yet natural recordings. At the heart of this series is the interaction between musicians, the emotions that emerge in the moment, the sounds, and the power of improvisation. In this opening session of the "Mikail's Berlin Sessions" series, I'm thrilled to be joined by my dear friend and an exceptional percussion master, Hogir Göregen https://www.instagram.com/hogir.percussion/ . Eleven years ago, when we both were new musicians in Berlin, we first met in a true jam session environment. We immediately connected through music, and from that moment on, our paths never diverged. After playing together in numerous bands and projects, we eventually formed the Heval Trio (https://hevaltrio.com) with buzuq artist Mevan Younes. We continue our collaborative work both as a trio and as a duo. Our first piece is "Meşk Havası", an instrumental composition by the highly respected clarinetist Selim Sesler. This piece holds a special place in our musical journey, as it’s one we frequently played with Hogir in the past. The concept of "meşk" beautifully encapsulates the essence of this series, as it can be seen as the equivalent of a "jam session" in Eastern cultures. Huge thanks to everyone supporting this challenging project with so much love. Special shoutout to Gülsah, Milan and Ari for opening their garden and lovely home to us. And to the amazing Emre Nisanci for ensuring the best possible natural sound of these live moments. Lastly, my co-producer, cameraman, director, and much more, dearest Batuhan Kavlak thank you a thousand times for your incredible efforts and great work! Mikail’s Berlin Sessions feat. Ufuk Elik - Hicaz Mandıra

Mikail's Berlin Sessions returns with another fantastic guest: Ufuk Elik, a bağlama virtuoso, singer, and educator who has been part of Berlin's vibrant music scene for some time. Like me, Ufuk comes from Istanbul and brings his rich musical heritage to life through his solo work and two unique projects: Paye, a Folktronica duo, and Muhtelif, an international band exploring Anatolian music and original Turkish compositions. You can explore more of Ufuk’s music here: https://open.spotify.com/intl-de/artist/2Yax77p2iuuBIsOtPkISAr?si=7Cqrp7VOS8KA5VyBmYI7fQ In this session, we chose to perform "Hicaz Mandıra", a well-known instrumental and dance piece in 7/8 time. This melody is popular across Turkey, Greece, and the Middle East. Due to its rhythmic and melodic characteristics, it’s often mistaken for the Greek traditional dance style “Mantilatos”. There's also a playful rumor suggesting this piece might have been composed by Ottoman Sultan Abdülaziz. While it's likely he played it (as a music enthusiast), Mandıra is a traditional style from Thrace and Western Anatolia. Though there are many versions of this piece online, this might be the first-ever Accordion & Bağlama interpretation! We’d love to hear your thoughts on the harmony (or disharmony!?) between these two instruments. This session wouldn’t have been possible without my incredible production partner Batuhan Kavlak, who captured the magic on camera, and Emre Nişancı, who worked wonders with the sound. A huge thank you to both! “Hicaz Mandıra” Performed by: 🎵 Ufuk Elik – Bağlama (Saz) https://www.instagram.com/ufukelik 🎵 Mikail Yakut – Accordion 🎥 Video – Batuhan Kavlak 🎧 Mix – Emre Nişancı Berlin, 2024 Follow me for more: INSTAGRAM https://www.instagram.com/mikordeon FACEBOOK https://www.facebook.com/mikordeon YOUTUBE https://www.youtube.com/@mikailyakutofficial

Mikail’s Berlin Sessions feat. Sema Moritz - Mazi Kalbimde Bir Yaradır

For the eight episode of Mikail's Berlin Sessions, I had the privilege of collaborating with Sema Moritz, an exceptional artist who started her career in classical Turkish music and gained recognition in Germany through her significant projects such as Gruppe Taksim, Kreuzberger Freunde, and the Türkischen Arbeiterchor Westberlin, each reflecting her dedication to bridging cultures and reviving musical heritage. Still Sema is best known for her work "Efsane Hanımlar" (Legendary Ladies), which revisits the timeless songs of women who shaped the music scene of Türkiye. In this session, we performed "Mazi Kalbimde Bir Yaradır" (The Past Is a Wound in My Heart), composed by Necip Celal Andel in 1928 and recorded by Seyyan Hanım in 1932 as the first Turkish-language tango. This piece marks a milestone in the history of tango in Türkiye, which began gaining recognition in the early 20th century. In the early years of the Republic, tango became an integral part of social life and entertainment culture, especially in Istanbul’s Pera (Beyoğlu) district. As a dance form where men and women performed together, tango also reflected the societal changes and modernization movements of the time. Initially, foreign tango melodies were adapted with Turkish lyrics, but local composers soon began creating original works, paving the way for a distinctive Turkish tango tradition. "Mazi Kalbimde Bir Yaradır" has since become a classic, reinterpreted by many artists over the years. Its heartfelt lyrics express the lingering scars of a lost love, resonating across generations. I would like to express my deep gratitude to dear Uygar Önder Şimşek for such an impressive video. Many thanks to Emre Nişancı for working his magic on the sound and the best camera crew: Batuhan Kavlak and Semih Yıldız. „Mazi Kalbimde Bir Yaradır“ Music: Necip Celal Andel Lyrics: Necdet Rüştü Efe Performed by Sema Moritz – Vocals https://www.instagram.com/semamoritz/?hl=de Mikail Yakut – Accordion Camera – Uygar Önder Şimşek, Semih Yıldız, Batuhan Kavlak Editing – Uygar Önder Şimşek https://www.instagram.com/uygaronder Mix – Emre Nişancı https://www.instagram.com/enisanci/ Berlin - Kreuzberg, 2024 INSTAGRAM https://www.instagram.com/mikordeon FACEBOOK https://www.facebook.com/mikordeon YOUTUBE https://www.youtube.com/@mikailyakutofficial LYRICS The Past Is a Wound in My Heart I, too, once endured the pangs of love My life burned away from this affection I realized that the price of love Was my youth, slipping from my hands I bowed before you, surrendered This person didn’t become ours In the end, I fell and gave my life To the green sea in your eyes Though I never embraced your waist, I never gave up this yearning A sorrowful tale it is, they took her away from me She became someone else’s beloved, strangers found happiness My heart became a desolate land, ruined from end to end The past is a wound in my heart My fate is darker than my hair What makes me weep from time to time Is this sorrowful memory You never let me rest on your chest Nor comforted me with a kiss Years passed long after you And you forgot me for that woman Though I never embraced your waist, I never gave up this yearning A sorrowful tale it is, they took her away from me She became someone else’s beloved, strangers found happiness My heart became a desolate land, ruined from end to end Mazi Kalbimde Bir Yaradır Ben de gönül çektim eskiden Yandı hayatım bu sevgiden Anladım ki bir aşka bedel Gençliğimmiş elimden giden Önünde ben geldim de dize Yâr olmadı bu kimse bize En nihayet düşüp can verdim Gözündeki yeşil denize Sarmadımsa da belden, geçmedim bu emelden Bir hazin maceradır onu aldılar elden Başkasına yâr oldu, eller bahtiyâr oldu Gönlüm hep baştan başa viran bir diyâr oldu Mazi kalbimde bir yaradır Bahtım saçlarımdan karadır Beni zaman zaman ağlatan İşte bu hazin hatıradır Ne göğsünde uyuttu beni Ne bûseyle avuttu beni Geçti ardından uzun yıllar O kadında unuttu beni Sarmadımsa da belden, geçmedim bu emelden Bir hazin maceradır onu aldılar elden Başkasına yâr oldu, eller bahtiyâr oldu Gönlüm hep baştan başa viran bir diyâr oldu
